It was two years ago when I nervously entered our elementary school publication. I was then given the job to be the sports writer. I was just 10 years old that time and I was in grade five. I scored second place in the Division School Press Conference ’06. I felt encouraged to read and learn more about journalism.
As I entered the Regional School Press Conference in Tacurong City, I was only 10 years old and I am competing with 11 and some were 12 year old students. Indeed, I was obviously nervous that time. Feeling cold and sleepy as I got sleepless for two nights before the contest day. I was ill and had fever but I luckily finished as the second placer and immediately representing my hometown General Santos City and the Region 12 for the National School Press Conference in Baguio City.
Hell, I was definitely brave yet odd as I was too short for a fifth grader that time.*i was only 128 cm tall* I really remembered my first time to travel to Luzon and experiencing the thrill inside an airplane.*it was not that good though as I was deaf most of the time*. I enjoyed the free trip for the whole year. Landing in NAIA and riding the bus for Baguio City was *kewl*. I was accompanied by my former coach in journalism Mr. Rommel Jolo. We had a very great time traveling in the coldest place I’ve ever been. When I saw the Lion’s Head and the felt the long and winding Kenon Road. It gave me pleasure to see the Philippines’ finest Summer City for free! Did you hear that for free?! Plus the bonus money and food!! I almost forgot my contest as I felt the euphoria of sight seeing and of course visiting the hot spots of Baguio. Too bad, when I was boating with the Dadiangas West Publication, Sir Kenneth and Sir Rommel my cellphone accidentally slipped from its pouch and went drowning down the deep Burnham Lake. *sighs*:((. It was the contest day and I showed deep faith to God and I was recharged by sleeping early.*lol* The sport was Sepak Takraw in which I was not that familiar. The results were in, I was lip-biting and feeling that I’m not gonna win. Which eventually turned true.
Too bad, Mark Arlo H. Segundo, try next year.
And so, the story continued. I ventured my last year in elementary for sports writing again with a new coach Ms. Giovanna Abecia. *sorry if I misspelled your name*. I think I finished third in DSPC ’08. Sorry if I forgot my ranking that year. RSPC ’08 was very good too as we visited Mlang, Cotabato. I finished third there. Wew, that was a thriller that time. I got my fingers crossed there just to go back and take my last chance for my elementary years to reach NSPC second time around.
And then it was in Koronadal City, just miles away from my hometown! It was in my home region! I found the contest day a bit relaxed moment for me. But I never thought of winning with pure sheer luck. I went bravely asking the players for the badminton exhibition game. The results were finally in, I placed my two fingers crossed and constantly biting my lips as the sports writing English results were spoken. *blah.blah* 2nd Place Sports Writing English from General Santos City, I was anxious and felt the pressure, from Holy Trinity College, and then I cried the tears they called “tears of joy”, and they said The Lamb which was our English school publication. I went up to stage with my adviser and happily carried the heavy trophy which was almost as tall as me. I smiled as I saw my name in the wall projected by the projector, *of course*.
I then called my parents in GenSan letting them know about my accomplishment. I was super duper happy as I carried my trophy home with a proud grin on the face.
Now, I am a sophomore in Notre Dame of Dadiangas University. I can still recall the past. The cherished NSPC moments in my elementary days.
Hopefully, I can enter my current school publication and reach the peak and maybe win the coveted Journalist of the Year. Wish I could see my previous friends. Kudos! To all the ’07 and ’08 NSPC Winners.
